Lakeshore Habitat for Humanity is a partnership, home building & home repair Christian ministry serving Ottawa and part of Allegan Counties that has served more than 150 families and 800 individuals since 1990.
It is based on the principal that all God's people deserve a decent place to live and that our community is a better place when that occurs.
When Habitat families move from poverty housing into their own homes, they report better health, increased stability in the family, and children who do better in school.
Habitat for Humanity has always been a strong proponent of 'a hand up rather than a hand out.' Houses are sold to qualified homeowners without profit, using affordable mortgages.
Homeowners also complete "sweat equity" or volunteer hours as part of the partnership. Homeowners are able to re-pay their mortgages over the course of 20-25 years. Payment will be less than 30% of the monthly income and usually under 30 years.
These payments, together with donations, grants, and sales from our ReStore create a sustainable revenue model that supports the construction of more homes for future Habitat partners.
We now offer home repair services at various levels so that we can serve more families and impact more communities. These repairs are mainly external, including siding, window replacement, insulation, roof repair, etc.
The exciting aspect of this is our collaboration with other agencies and ministries to accomplish a great deal more together. We are excited to see what the future brings!
Also, globally, Lakeshore Habitat for Humanity supports Nicaragua Habitat for Humanity and have partnered with them from the very beginning. To date they have built over 60 homes with our gifts alone!
